Devotion Time - Day 6

Following along with the water theme from Day 5 we have another of Jesus' incredible miracles! I hope you have fun with this!

Day 6

Matthew 8:23-27 “Jesus Calms the Storm”p.334

Treasure Hunt Resources: Toy boats and bath or water play tub!

Beginning Activity/Chat: Talk about storms and how they make the kids feel. They can get pretty rough sometimes and it can be especially scary if you are out on the water in a boat. Ask them what they think might happen to a boat in a storm. Demonstrate in the bath or water play tub with a toy boat just how scary the rough water could be.
Today in our true story from the bible we are going to hear about some people who were out on a boat when a big storm came and Jesus’ amazing miracle to save them.

“Jesus Clams the storm” Beginner’s Bible, p. 334
IN THIS TRUE STORY FROM THE BIBLE WE CAN LEARN THAT BECAUSE JESUS IS GOD HE HAS THE INCREDIBLE POWER TO CONTROL STORMS AND TO STOP THEM WITH HIS WORDS!

Questions:
1.        Where were Jesus and his disciples in this story? (Out in a boat)
2.        What happened to make the disciples so scared? (A big scary storm rocking and tipping the boat)
3.        When the disciples woke Jesus what did he do? (He told the storm to stop!)

Wow! How incredible it must have been for those disciples to see the wind and the waves respond to Jesus’ voice and stop still. That truly must have been amazing to watch. What an powerful God we trust in and serve. The disciples that night had been so scared of the massive storm rocking their boat that they had forgotten that because Jesus was with them they had nothing to be afraid of, no matter how scary the storm was. How exciting it is that Jesus is always with us too when we trust in Him! Even at times when we feel scared he will be there watching over us and ready to help us when we call out to Him!

If you have time you might like to make some jelly boats (as in the picture below) to remember the story together and to enjoy cooking and sharing a special treat as a family! You cut the oranges in half and take the flesh out before filling them with jelly and allowing them to set. Then you cut them into quarters and make a sail!

Prayer:
Jesus you are so amazingly powerful! Thank you that you are in such great control of our world that even the wind and the waves listen to you. Please help us to always be faithful and trust in you and your mighty power. Amen.

Memory Verse Activities:
Continue with the song and actions!
Learn how to make origami boats together and use them to write the words/sections of the verse on the sides of them and see if you can “sail” them into the right order again! You could use the bottom of a cardboard box to make an ocean to place them in, and even paint it!
